SIYAPHAMBILI HIGHLIGHTS

TURNING A DEPENDANCY INTO A JOURNEY TO INDEPENDENCE

Meet Lester, who joined our Capricorn family in March 2022. Lester’s greatest asset is his positive attitude that has held him in good stead to quickly grasp the skills for daily living which form part of the psychosocial rehabilitation programme. Always willing to help, he is now quite skilled in cooking and cleaning and is proud of his newfound independence.

Full of confidence in himself, and with the support of his houseparent, he shared his life journey on the radio to create awareness during July – the month of celebrating persons with psychosocial disability. He shared about his recovery from substance abuse, his learning skills to manage his mental health, and his journey towards recovery. He elaborated on what a full life he has today. He encouraged listeners to strive to achieve in life – and not to let their disability get in the way of a rich future.

Lester successfully applied for a learnership with Siyaya and is now tackling this with determination to make a success of it. He has been working hard on family relationships, and has been fortunate to have a mother who knows how to give him the support he needs to flourish. With this, Lester has been integrated back into his community and we wish him well on his new journey to success!

OPEN DAYS CAPRICORN AND HERBERG

Every year, Siyaphambili hosts an Open Day at each of the two Psychosocial Rehabilitation Facilities. Associates, community members, donors and family members were invited to learn more about the programmes offered and see the assets gained by the Learning Partners through their participation. The Learning Partners showcased their arts and crafts, treated the visitors to delicious cake and tea, and shared a little about their journey – encouraging an attitude of care, understanding, and empathy.

STRUCK BY CRIME – ASSISTANCE WELCOMED

Our Psychosocial Rehabilitation Facility in Walmer, close to Airport Valley, has been a target for criminals with numerous break-ins leading to high maintenance costs. This has necessitated constant security upgrades. Our gate had to be replaced twice and we even had an incident where the spikes (meant to deter entry to the property) were stolen. These incidents leave the Learning Partners feeling vulnerable and insecure. We are most grateful to Atlas, whose response time is amazing whilst sharing a special relationship with the Learning Partners by going the extra mile to make them feel safer. Any support the community can provide in assisting with maintenance/security upgrades would be most appreciated.
